The Chandigarh Food Safety Department conducted a surveillance drive to check the quality of watermelons being sold in the city, officials said.
On-the-spot testing for key parameters was carried out, and samples have also been sent to NABL-accredited laboratories for detailed analysis, they said.
Notably, the move comes amid reports that a family of four died of suspected food poisoning in Mumbai a few days ago. The department also advised the public to avoid eating cut or peeled fruits sold in the open at roadside stalls, rehdi markets, and street vendors, and those exposed to dust, flies, and contamination.
“Do not buy fruits that are overripe, bruised, damaged, or have an unusual smell or appearance. Wash all fruits thoroughly with clean potable water before eating, even if you plan to peel them.
